NSIA joined with a coalition of fisheries organizations, representing both recreational and commercial fishermen, to voice our opposition to several salmon killing riders that are currently included House version of the 2019 Energy and Water Development Appropriations bill. You can find the full text of this letter below.
Two riders directly impact Northwest sportfishing enthusiast and businesses. Section 506 is a resurrection of the infamous anti-spill HR 3144 which seeks to thwart court-mandated spill over Columbia system dams. Outmigrating salmon depend on this spill and NSIA will fight hard against any iteration of anti-spill legislation. Section 507 blocks dam removal without explicit Congressional authority. NSIA opposes adding another pointless barrier to the long complex process of removing these unwanted dams.
NSIA has been working tirelessly on the issues of spill and dam removal for many years. We will continue to educate legislators on the critical importance of healthy salmon populations to the economies and communities of the Pacific Northwest.
